Mechanical Support Manager, Laos
The starting salary package for this position is £51,876 GBP/ approx. $73,000 USD including all allowances.
About the Laos programme:
Laos has the unenviable title of being the most bombed country in the world per capita. For nearly a decade, Laos was subjected to heavy US bombing as part of the wider war in Indochina. US bombing records show that at least two million metric tonnes of ordnance was dropped between 1964 and 1973.
Working across Xieng Khouang and Khammouane provinces since 1994, MAG has directly helped more than 900,000 people to live safer lives, free from danger and fear. Another 2.1 million men, women and children have benefitted indirectly. Our teams have cleared more than 58,000,000 square metres of land in Laos, removing and destroying more than 211,000 items of UXO, including nearly 90,000 cluster sub munitions.
In addition, MAG has given more than 2,900 risk education sessions to around 194,000 people, helping them to stay safe until land is cleared.
About the role:
The Mechanical Support Manager will be responsible for ensuring that MAG’s vehicle fleet and mechanical assets are managed and maintained in order to support our operations in Laos. In addition to this the post holder will also be responsible for supporting and overseeing workshop set up and maintenance. A key part of this role will be training national staff who utilise these assets, working to build local capacity for humanitarian mine action activities. The role can often be remote, working in challenging contexts away from home comforts, but the life-saving impact the work has on local communities is very real, and rewarding. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis. The role is based in the field with intermittent travel to our headquarters in Vientiane.
About you:
You must be a qualified mechanic with significant experience of maintaining and repairing a large fleet of vehicles and wide range of mechanical assets. This includes: diagnostics, welding (skilled in welding/arc welding specific, TIG and MIG welding desirable) and preventative maintenance. You should also have the ability to find creative solutions to issues that arise and experience of providing technical expertise to develop existing fleet management policies and procedures. Additionally, you must have experience managing and capacity building a team of national staff. Areas of operations are often remote with basic amenities, so applicants will need to be able to deal with living and working in challenging environments. You must be willing to take on the challenges of working in the developing world, as part of a flexible and committed team, to save lives in communities that need it most.
