Head of Policy and Influence

Manchester City Centre

Salary: £50,340 per annum (plus contributory pension)

Join a Nobel Prize-winning organisation committed to creating safe and secure futures for women, men and children around the world. MAG works by finding and destroying landmines, cluster bombs and the explosive remnants of war and by advocating and campaigning on behalf of those whose lives are blighted by the lethal debris of conflict. Be part of this life-changing mission by leading our work to develop policy and by influencing others to help us free from fear some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world.

MAG’s policy and advocacy work aims to achieve positive change that benefits conflict-affected communities. It does this by a combination of awareness-raising and persuasion of decision-makers, presenting compelling cases for policy continuity or change based on evidence and experience from our global programme. It gives a voice to communities affected by conflict.

In this role, reporting to MAG’s Fundraising and Engagement Director your ultimate goal will be to lead MAG’s work to influence widespread positive change in public policy, public perception and actions by key decision makers in fulfilment of MAG’s mission. Your work will include four key areas:

• Policy and Research; Providing conceptual, intellectual and practical leadership to the development, implementation and management of MAG’s strategy for sectoral, national and international policy work.

• Advocacy; Facilitating MAG’s engagement at major sector meetings, coordinating content and ensuring that MAG is represented appropriately.

• Campaigning; Offering wider leadership on behalf of MAG to the humanitarian mine action sector as a whole to develop campaigns, which will contribute to the achievement of MAG’s vision and mission.

• Team Management; Provide direction, management support and development to line reports and take responsibility for a robust and healthy management culture.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working in a policy, advocacy or campaign role at a senior level within the humanitarian or development sector, with experience leading on strategy development and translating this into policy positons. Strong relationship and team management skills are also critical. Experience in the humanitarian mine action sector would be an advantage, but is not essential, however a genuine knowledge of humanitarian policy and a willingness to learn about MAG’s global work in detail will be.

The role will be based in central Manchester and will involve occasional overseas travel, including to our country programmes in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

A relocation package may be available for this role. For further information on this, you can contact humenresources@maginternational.org. If you’re considering relocating to Manchester for this role, you can access MAG’s guide to Manchester, in the below application pack.
